Built in the run up to WWII, it soon became an RAF base after the war started. After hostilities, it transferred to the Fleet Air Arm as HMS Goldfinch in 1945 until mid 1953 before being handed over to the Maltese Government in 1963.
It effectively closed for flying in 1968 and much of the area has been turned into a park. An area has been preserved as the Malta Aviation Museum. In 2011, a short length of runway was brought back into occasional use.
