The ALAT received 170 SA.341F from 1973 to 1977 to replace the Alouette 2. 110 of them were originally envisioned to be upgraded as SA.341M with provision for antitank HOT missiles but after entering service in 1978 they proved to be unpowered for their new role so only 40 were modified. Other 62 SA.341F were fitted with a GIAT 20 mm cannon. In February 1980, deliveries of the more powerful SA.342M began.
Up until mid Sep 2009, it was relatively common for ALAT Gazelles to change their codes when they were reallocated to a different unit. After that date they adopted fixed 3 letter codes, beginning G.. This made the full safety of flight callsign F-MG..
