Originally formed as a Royal Navy unit between Aug 1943 and Dec 1945. Reformed as a RAN unit on 13 Jan 1958 at Nowra as a fixed wing Fleet Requirements and Communications unit, it became an ASW training unit in May 1959, before disbanding into 724 Squadron in May 1961.
Reformed on 1 Nov 1962 at Nowra, this time as a rotary wing anti-submarine squadron with Wessex HAS.31. It shadowed and supported 817 Squadron during much of this period. It disbanded on 27 Dec 1975.
On December 2012 was announced 725 Squadron will be reactivated to train crews for the new MH-60R Seahawk helicopters. 816 Squadron will transition from the S-70-B2 Seahawk to the MH-60R as the operational unit.
Took delivery of 2 MH-60R from Lockheed Martin at NAS Jacksonville in late 2013, with 2 more in Feb 2014.
On October 2014 hits 1,000 training flight hours in the MH-60R Seahawk. The milestone was achieved during an exercise with a Peruvian Navy Type 209 submarine. 725 Squadron scheduled to return home from US Naval Station Jacksonville Florida next December.
Officially commissioned with the MH-60R on June 11, 2015 at Nowra. First "Australian-made" students graduated on October 2015
