AZDPS Air Rescue is tasked with state-wide law enforcement missions, medical evacuations, and search-and-rescue tasks. Arizona Highway Patrol (later formed into Arizona DPS) began using helicopters in 1969. A joint venture project with Arizona State University studying aeromedical evacuation was started in 1969 with two Fairchild Hiller FH-1100s, based at Falcon Field Airport (KFFZ) in Mesa, Arizona, close to Phoenix, Arizona. After the study concluded, AZDPS Air Rescue Section was formed in 1972 with Bell 206 Jet Rangers. These aircraft were later replaced with Bell 206L Long Rangers, which themselves were supplemented and later replaced with Bell 407s. AZDPS Air Rescue now operates helicopters out of four bases: Flagstaff , Kingman, and Tuscon, and Phoenix.
