Having slimmed down, closed down and then gathered together the remaining threads of UK Government Defence Research (including such gems as the National Gas Turbine Establishment at
Pyestock), they were merged with
DRA into the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA) in Apr 1995.
Later in July 2001, there was a fundamental shift in the provision of defence research in the UK: DERA was split up. The sensitive nuclear, chemical and biological research was collected into the Defence Science & Technology Laboratory and the remainder was consolidated and sold as the commercial company
QinetiQ.
